What Is ESG and Why Does It Matter at Star West?

At Star West Petroleum, we’ve always taken pride in doing more than just fueling engines. We’re building relationships, protecting the land, and making sure everyone on our team and in our communities gets home safely. Now, we’re stepping into the next chapter of that journey — one that’s focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) responsibility.

But what does “ESG” actually mean?

Environmental: Protecting the Land We Work On

We operate across some of the most beautiful and sensitive landscapes in Canada. That means our environmental responsibilities are more than checkboxes — they’re about action and accountability.
Examples of our environmental focus:

  • Spill prevention and rapid incident response
  • Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from trucks and facilities
  • Expanding clean fuel options, like R100 diesel and Aspen fuels

Social: Putting People and Communities First

Social responsibility is about how we treat people — our workers, our customers, and our neighbours. From our Indigenous partnerships to our safety-first mindset, we’re building a company that’s rooted in trust, inclusion, and respect.
What that looks like in practice:

  • Strong safety training and well-being programs for staff
  • Career opportunities for underrepresented groups
  • Active economic partnerships with First Nations communities

 Governance: Doing What’s Right, Transparently

Governance is how we make decisions — fairly, honestly, and with integrity. It includes everything from clear reporting to ethical supplier choices.
This includes:

  • Transparent ESG reporting and data tracking
  • Choosing vendors who align with our sustainability values
  • Following up on commitments, not just making them

 Why It Matters to You

ESG isn’t just a corporate buzzword. It’s about how we operate day-to-day — and everyone plays a role. Whether we are behind the wheel, in the warehouse, or on the phone with a customer, our work directly impacts our safety, our emissions, and our reputation.

What’s Coming Next

Over the next few months, you’ll start seeing more ESG efforts across the company — from improved spill response kits and clean fuel incentives to inclusion training and supplier scorecards. We’ll also be inviting more input from staff to shape the path forward.

This blog series will help keep you in the loop — and show how our customers are already contributing to Star West’s leadership in responsible fuel and lubricants distribution.
